When visiting family in the central Victorian town of Charlton we saw a “For Sale” sign outside the Charlton house and immediately fell in love!
We had been looking around for some time for a property in the country we could renovate, use as a holiday home for a while, and then retire to and this one was perfect!
Built in the early 1920s by well known and prolific local builder Richard Windsor, the house demonstrates original design qualities of a specific interwar “Charlton” style. These qualities include the broad gambrel roof that terminates into an encircling bullnosed verandah, lapped galvanised corrugated steel roof cladding and horizontal timber weatherboard wall cladding. The symmetry of design, accentuated by the central timber framed doorway with sidelights and highlights, timber framed double hung tripartite windows, stop chamfered timber verandah posts and the decorative timber verandah brackets is more reflective of Victorian era design than houses constructed during the interwar period.
The challenge over the coming years is to renovate and restore the house to a comfortable future retirement property, whist retaining the warmth and charm of it’s Victorian era design.
